Adoption Assistance

Eligible employees who adopt a child receive a lump sum payment of up to $5,000 to help with adoption expenses, including:

  • Agency adoption fees
  • Court costs
  • Attorney fees
  • Round-trip transportation to bring the child home

If you’re classified to work 30 hours per week or more, you’re eligible for adoption assistance. This benefit provides reimbursement for adoption-related expenses up to $3,000 per child with a lifetime benefit of $6,000 per family.

Gestational Surrogacy Program

Gestational surrogacy is an arrangement in which a person carries and delivers a baby for another person or couple. The person who carries the baby is the gestational surrogate or gestational carrier.

Our Gestational Surrogacy Program reimburses gestational surrogacy parents up to $15,000 for eligible expenses associated with the gestational surrogacy. The program is open to benefits-eligible employees.

Subsidized Backup Care for Children and Adults

Update to backup care in 2025: Effective Jan. 1, 2025, we transitioned our backup care program from Care@Work to Bright Horizons to improve your access to the care you need. Your access to Care@Work and the premium Care.com membership ended Dec. 31, 2024.

You have 10 days of subsidized backup care each year through Bright Horizons for when your regular cargiving arrangements for children, adults or elders is unavailable during work hours.

You can book backup care up to 90 days in advance (or at the last minute) multiple ways:

Note: If you use more than $5,000 in backup care and/or dependent care flexible spending account benefits for any 12-month period, the excess will be applied to your wages, as required by the IRS.

You have access to a marketplace of family education and care offerings with exclusive discounts and savings through Bright Horizons, including:

  • Free premium Sittercity membership: Find vetted babysitters, housekeepers, nannies, pet care and more with free background checks.
  • Years Ahead elder care resources: Assess the needs of adults and elders and find caregivers, facilities and help with everyday activities.
  • Bright Horizons child care centers: Preferred enrollment and waived registration fees at most Bright Horizons centers or tuition discounts at partner network centers.
  • Academic support: Discounted homework help and test prep through Sylvan Learning, Varsity Tutors and Revolution Prep.

Sign up on the Bright Horizons website. Once you sign up, use your Bright Horizon credentials to activate your Sittercity and Years Ahead accounts.

Lactation Support Program

Pregnancy, childbirth, adoption, surrogacy, and loss are all major life transitions. Continuing to chest/breastfeed, or exclusively pump, requires extra planning and support. Johns Hopkins’ Lactation Support Program helps make the transition back to work or study easier.

View the list of registered rooms across the All Children’s campuses . Several are equipped with hospital-grade Medela Symphony pumps, and pump kits can be purchased in the gif shop for a discounted price.

Complete these steps to participate in the Lactation Support Program:

  1. Request lactation accommodations .
  2. Register to use a lactation room . After you register, you’ll get a confirmation email containing room amenity and access information.
